In an effort to boost the local farming industry across the Kingdom, regional retailer LuLu rolled out its latest initiative “From Our Land,” a week-long event that highlights locally grown agricultural produce with a special focus on organic and biodynamic products.
The campaign was virtually inaugurated by Fahad Al-Hamzi, general manager at the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture — Riyadh, in the presence of Shehim Mohammed, director of LuLu Saudi Hypermarkets, together with government officials and other dignitaries. The promotion runs until Feb. 9 and is available at all LuLu Hypermarkets in the Kingdom.
“We highly appreciate LuLu for its efforts in hosting such initiatives to support local farmers. It is one of the ministry’s goals to broaden the scope of promoting locally grown products and we thank LuLu for making it possible. We are looking forward to working on more collaborations with LuLu in the future,” said Al-Hamzi.
Every year, LuLu promotes more than 25,000 tons of locally sourced fresh fruits and vegetables across its stores in Saudi Arabia — from tomatoes to onions, potatoes, cucumbers, capsicums, melons, and herbs and greens, along with more than 8,500 tons of local meat, fresh and frozen poultry products and 5,500 tons of local fish.
Mohammed said: “We see our vital role as a retailer to maintain food supply through establishing a strong relationship with trusted farmers. Apart from giving local suppliers a great opportunity for a new platform to promote their products, this initiative is also an avenue to educate our shoppers on high-quality and organic selection available from the farms.”
Another LuLu campaign, “Saudi Kitchen” aims to promote local cuisine and delicacies. A group of male and female chefs from the Kingdom are showcasing their culinary expertise, offering customers an authentic taste of Saudi cuisine.
In line with the measures taken by the Saudi government to curb the spread of COVID-19, the management of LuLu has requested its customers to use the Tawakkalna app for the safety of all those who visit their hypermarkets. The management has assured that all health and safety protocols are being followed at its outlets, including enhanced sanitization programs and adherence to physical distancing norms.
Garnering more than 1,600,000 shopping patrons every day, LuLu is the fastest-growing retail chain across 10 countries that include the GCC, India, Egypt, Indonesia and Malaysia. Founded in the early 90s, it has successfully expanded to different parts of the world and currently operates 199 stores with a workforce of more than 55,000.
