Meta to ‘introduce AI agents to billions of people’

Meta chief Mark Zuckerberg said that recent advances in artificial technology present an “opportunity to introduce AI agents to billions of people in ways that will be useful and meaningful.”

The Zuck made the remarks during a call with investors on Wednesday following Meta’s release of company data for the first quarter.

His words were a reminder to investors that Meta is intent on competing with the likes of Microsoft-backed OpenAI and Google when it comes to creating generative AI-powered chatbots like ChatGPT and Bard, which have gained huge attention in recent months.

As Microsoft and Google set about injecting AI technology into their online products, Zuckerberg was keen to let investors know that similar tools developed by Meta will “touch every single one of our products” and be useful for everyone from “regular people to creators to businesses.”

As an example, the Facebook co-founder talked about how “tens of millions of AI agents” working for companies could boost customer support interactions, resulting in “way more businesses that can afford to have people engaging in chat.”

Meta’s boss added that his company is still intent on developing the metaverse, despite recent reports suggesting a shift toward AI.

Zuckerberg’s comments come just a couple of months after he revealed that Meta was bringing together its AI teams in a structural change designed to “turbocharge” its work in that area.

They also follow major changes at Meta that have seen more than 20,000 jobs go in recent months, with Zuckerberg earlier marking out 2023 as the “year of efficiency.”

Meta on Wednesday reported $28.6 billion in income for the first quarter ending March 31. Profit came in at $5.7 billion, marking a dip of 24 percent compared to the same period last year.

Elon Musk setting up generative-AI project at Twitter, report claims

Elon Musk is embarking on his own artificial intelligence (AI) project within Twitter, Business Insider reported on Tuesday.

With so much attention currently lavished upon generative AI tools such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard chatbots, it’s perhaps little wonder that Musk — a man who appears to love technology and attention in equal measure — wants a piece of the action.

Apple sued by Baidu over fake Ernie chatbot apps on App Store

Chinese tech giant Baidu has sued Apple and a number of app developers over fake versions of its AI chatbot that have appeared in the App Store.

Baidu unveiled its own version of OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard chatbots in March, but unlike its competitors, Ernie, as it’s called, is not yet widely available for public use. Instead, anyone interested in taking Ernie for a spin has to apply to Baidu for a special code and then wait to see if they get selected.

What is AGI? A self aware AI might be closer than you think

Artificial General Intelligence, or AGI, is considered by some to be the end goal of artificial intelligence (AI) development. Instead of having an AI that can perform specific tasks, an AGI would be able to perform any task you set it, and with enough time and computational power, do it well. Some see ChatGPT as the first example of AGI, while others consider us at least a few years away from an AI that can do anything.

Really, it’s more of a debate about how exactly we define AGI, and how to know when we get there.

What is AGI?

An AGI agent should, in theory, be able to complete almost any intellectual task that a human or animal can do — and potentially do it better. There are certain tasks that even an AGI can’t complete, however, such as almost anything to do with the physical world. That is, at least, until robotics come into play.
