In today’s world, the ability to communicate in more than one language is becoming increasingly important. As such, more and more people are taking up language learning in an effort to broaden their skillset. While doing so, however, one should be mindful of the correct methods of language learning. Here we will look at some of the worst approaches to learning a language and how to avoid making the same mistakes.

The most obvious way to not learn a language is to simply ignore or forget about it until it is too late. Learning a language takes consistent effort and dedication and unless this is maintained, one will find oneself quickly falling behind. Additionally, assuming that one “already knows enough” or that language learning is an easy process can lead to an immense amount of frustration and disappointment on discovering that this is simply not true.

Also consider the method of learning. Focus primarily on memorization and overlook actively speaking, writing and engaging with others with the language. Certainly all languages require some level of memorization, whether it’s learning pronunciation or basic vocabulary, but relying solely on memorization without real world applications can have the opposite effect of what you intend.

Lastly, choose a method of language learning that inefficient, and thus leads to frustration. For example, using outdated material, using books instead of an online tutorial, or simply not being guided by an experienced tutor. All of these may ultimately fail at teaching the learner a language.

In conclusion, learning a language successfully is more of an art then a science as everyone has different methods that work best for them. Careful consideration should be taken when choosing how to learn a new language, so choose wisely and be consistent with your efforts. Follow these tips to make sure that you’re learning the language the right way and not one of the wrong ways.
