Becoming a U.S. Citizen

The path to becoming a U.S. citizen is long, but it is possible for anyone to take the steps necessary to achieve this goal. Becoming a U.S. citizen offers many opportunities and attracts people from all corners of the world.

Steps to Becoming a U.S. Citizen

1. Become a Permanent Resident: The first step towards becoming a U.S. citizen is to become a permanent resident. This can be done in a number of ways, such as through family sponsorship, employment, or with a green card application. Once you have become a permanent resident, you will be eligible to pursue the next steps.

2. Meet Residency Requirements: After becoming a permanent resident, you must meet a residency requirement. You must have lived in the United States continuously for at least five years as a permanent resident before you can apply for U.S. citizenship.

3. Pass the English and U.S. History Tests: Once you reach the five-year mark, you to take a naturalization test that tests your understanding of English and U.S. history and government.

4. File the Application: Once the tests are passed, you can file a Form N-400 Application for Naturalization with USCIS. The application will include basic information about you, including your name, home address and employment.

5. Attend an Interview: After the application is filed, you will be asked to attend an interview. At this interview, you will be asked questions about your background, residence, employment and other topics related to your eligibility to become a U.S. citizen.
