What to do When You’re Feeling Suicidal

You may be overwhelmed with feelings of hopelessness and thinking of suicide as an escape. It is important to remember that suicide is not the solution. There are available solutions and support. Below are some things you can do when feeling suicidal:

Talk to a Trusted Family Member or Friend

Confiding in a family member or friend can be a great source of relief when feeling like you are completely alone in your struggles. They can be a non-judgmental source of support and possibly provide the guidance and help you need to get through this difficult time.

Reach Out to a Mental Health Professional

It’s important to talk to a doctor, mental health professional, or therapist to get the help you need. With the guidance of a professional, you can build a plan to help you cope with suicidal thoughts and feelings.

Engage in Self-Care

Try to do activities that you enjoy or give you a sense of accomplishment. Participating in activities that offer moments of joy can be a key element in providing stability during deep dark times. Here are some ideas for self-care activities:

    • Exercising

    • Engaging in hobbies or creative activities, such as drawing or painting

    • Listening to music

    • Spending time outdoors in nature

    • Writing out your thoughts and feelings in a journal

Reframe Suicidal Thoughts

It is very common to have fleeting suicidal thoughts throughout life. It’s important to remain aware of these thoughts and not become overwhelmed. Reframe negative and self-defeating thoughts with more positive thinking.
