Targeting metabolism to increase energy production has been proposed as a direction for therapeutic strategies, but developing a well-controlled system has been challenging. Writing in Nature, Chen et al. isolate a photosynthetic system from plants, encapsulate it in membranes of mammalian cells, and demonstrate light-dependent production of the key metabolites ATP and NADPH after transfer to mammalian cells.
