At the White House, Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), said the new strain of the Covid virus is “in search of the next vulnerable person to infect”. “The delta variant is more aggressive and much more transmissible than previously circulating strains,” she said.
“It is one of the most infectious respiratory viruses we know of, and that I have seen in my 20-year career.
“We are at yet another pivotal moment in this pandemic, with cases rising again and some hospitals reaching their capacity in some areas, we need to come together as one nation.”

Government officials warned that the surge of infections in the US is fuelled by the Delta variant and low vaccination rates in certain areas.

And 99.5 percent of Covid deaths recorded in the country were unvaccinated.
Florida, Texas and Missouri all have low vaccination rates – they account for 40 percent of new infections in the country, according to White House Covid expert Jeff Zients.

Florida especially is seeing a record number of new cases.
On Wednesday, the state reported 12,647 new cases – the highest number since January.
The same day, 55,132 cases were registered nationwide, meaning Florida’s daily infections made up about 23 percent.
Florida’s Governor Ron DeSantis urged people in the state to get the jab.
“These vaccines are saving lives,” Mr DeSantis said.
“They are reducing mortality.”
